Introduction
Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hindu civilization. According to Hindu tradition, this is the exact birthplace of Lord Shri Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The site has remained a center of devotion, pilgrimage, historical events, reconstruction and legal discourse for centuries. Today, it continues to represent faith, heritage and cultural consciousness.
Lord Krishna was born in Mathura in a prison cell where his parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, were imprisoned by King Kansa.
Temples existed at the site from ancient times. The first temple is believed to have been built around the 1st century CE.
A magnificent temple was built in the 16th–17th century during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir with the support of Dara Shikoh.
During Aurangzeb’s rule, the Keshav Dev Temple was demolished and the Shahi Idgah Mosque was constructed at or near the site.
After 1815 and especially after independence, the temple complex was reconstructed beside the Shahi Idgah Mosque.
Today, the matter is sub judice in Indian courts, involving historical, legal and constitutional dimensions.
